So here's a little randomness that might coalesce when I finish another post...Try to follow my nearly derailed train of thought. The woman on the left is Judy Holliday. If you have your LGBTQ membership card, you should know this part of the story. Judy won an Oscar in 1950 for Born Yesterday (over Bette Davis in All About Eve & Gloria Swanson in Sunset Blvd, both great films on the LGBTQ must watch list). But don't even start with the Gloria/Bette was robbed thing - I'll throw down for Judy - just watch the gin game scene and you'll know what I mean.
So. Judy has a son who grows up to be Jonathan Oppenheimer, who edited a film called Paris Is Burning (people who were voguing long before Madonna knew what the hell it was & which featured a drag artiste who, when she died, was found to have a mummified ex-trick hanging inside a garment bag in her NYC apt closet.
Now that's your google 'gay history' assignment for the day. Not exactly what Larry Kramer has in mind when talking about history, but hey. You get extra credit for having seen or seeking out all 4 films. You'll be ready to "hold onto your hats" for the bumpy night, you'll be "ready for your close up" and you'll never want to put out the fire that caused Paris to burn.

what is homo-centric?
homo-centric is a monthly reading series curated by Hank Henderson. The series is hosted by Stories Books & Cafe in Echo Park and takes place the 3rd Thursday of every month. By offering this space for LGBTQI writers to gather & share their words we hope to create a renewed sense of community. There's a hunger for connection and a wonder about our collective history that needs to be nurtured and continued.
