Poe-mo homos Jan 19th
homo-centric is starting out the new year with Poe-mo homos. Since the first reading of 2012 lands on Edgar Allan Poe's 202nd birthday we decided to fill a bleak, dark January night with original LGBTQI odd & eerie stories. Thursday January 19th at 7:30 we begin our 3rd year of readings at Stories Books & Cafe. Join us for a fun night of rantin' and um...raven.

Famous Carols
There's Carole Lombard, Carol Burnett (who was the only person to ever reply to my fan letter with a line by line response to my many questions when I was 13), Channing (um, "hello"...of course). There's the story of Carol Brady, Carroll O'Connor, and this time of year all types of Christmas carols.
Then there's Dark Carols. Imagine this: The Central Library in Los Angeles. The Mark Taper Auditorium. The Aloud Series. Me....in the center seats between a library aficionado & a man who knew Philip Littell (from where? from when? We never found out). Lights up on a stage bare except for a piano & microphone. But wait, I don't need to describe it because the Aloud series recorded it. So here for your holiday enjoyment is Philip Littell & Peter Golub with their Dark Carols. Two versions...the video below & the Free MP3 download so you can carry Philip around in your pocket for the rest of the holidays.

Video: We are part of the team!
I've watched this several times & each time it makes me happier than Andy Williams sounds singing that overplayed 'Most wonderful time of the year' song. It's shown up several places around the interweb, but there's some extra info about it over at a blog called B Turn (a place for music, culture and style of the New Balkans). It's a big deal & rightly so. Most of Serbia/Croatia don't believe there's even such a thing as gay. Last year, the first gay pride in Serbia was cancelled because the police couldn't guarantee the safety of participants against protesters who threatened physical violence against the LGBTQ community there. So just showing this on TV around the country is a huge push for recognition & understanding. And for me, just watch these guys as the kiss ends, their lips, the way their eyes open...Now I believe good kisses make good politics!

what is homo-centric?
homo-centric is a monthly reading series curated by Hank Henderson. The series is hosted by Stories Books & Cafe in Echo Park and takes place the 3rd Thursday of every month. By offering this space for LGBTQI writers to gather & share their words we hope to create a renewed sense of community. There's a hunger for connection and a wonder about our collective history that needs to be nurtured and continued.
