The WeHo Book Fair information message

homo-centric is going to have a booth at the 2011 West Hollywood Book Fair! The event takes place Sunday, Oct. 2nd from 10am to 6pm.

We'll be hosting two morning and two afternoon tent-events to celebrate the creativity and diversity of the LGBTQI writing community. There will also be a stage event on the Storytellers Stage with six writer/performers representing each letter of the LGBTQI acronym at 2:15pm.

Tent-event reading times are limited to a tight 7 minutes. As is the homo-centric way, you can do whatever you like as long as it is your words, your creation. Also, we encourage performance artists, singer/songwriters and avant-gardists to participate. So if you have an acoustic guitar or a 7-minute 2 character play well then, bring it on! Theater & lyrics are written words, too (besides, we like to shake it up a bit...books are so, well, quiet).

There will be no mic. It's a small 8x8 tent so we won't need one. There will be a music stand only if someone coughs one up...otherwise be prepared to hold your papers.

There will be a 30-minute break after each tent-event. This way, authors can sign & sell books, people can meet & greet, you can network & we all can build the L.A. area LGBTQI writing community.

If you are interested in participating please answer the following questions and reply to me by FRIDAY SEPT. 16TH.

1. Do you prefer a morning or afternoon reading? If no preference, please say so.

2. Are you published or not? (This is NOT a requirement. This info is only used to create diverse readings).

3. If published, are you interested in bringing, signing and/or selling your book?

4. Do you have other media (DVD, CD, ebooks) to sell?

5. Do you have postcards, business cards or flyers (8x10 maximum, please) that you would like to display?
We will have a card table at the edge of the boot for flyers, postcards & bookmarks.

6. Are you a Lambda Literary Emerging Voice from this or any other year? If so, which year?

7. Have you been nominated or won a Lammy? (Again, NOT a requirement, just a possible tie-in with the LambdaLit booth).

8. Are you available to help set up the booth on Saturday morning Oct. 1st between 10 & 1pm?

IF YOU WANT TO SELL BOOKS/CDs/DVDs:
Drop them off at the book fair site (location coming soon) SAT 10/1 between 10 & 1pm.
- or -
bring with for your reading.

WE WANT YOU TO LEAVE YOUR BOOKS/CSs/DVDs FOR THE DAY.
There will be bookcases for you to properly display your books cover front.
All merchandise must be clearly priced.
We'll display & take care of your purchases.
HOWEVER - ALL books and $$ must be picked up between 5 & 6:30 p.m. the day of the book fair.

Please, if you have suggestions or cash you'd like to throw at us, please contact Hank at homo-centric@att.net.
Funds are tight & decor may be minimal. I don't yet know where the booth will be located. When I find out I may be contacting all of you for resources.

In the meantime, answer the questions, edit your stories, practice your songs, write a play, be queer-ative and get ready to rock the 2011 West Hollywood Book Fair.

Thanks in advance,
hank

reading from & signing his new book
'Why Aren't You Smiling?'
with special guest Trebor Healey
(Through It Came Bright Colors & the forthcoming 'Faun')
Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket) says, "Everyone knows that all you need is love. Alvin Orloff's swell new novel asks what to do when you want something more."

homo-centric knows you want something more so please join us Thursday Sept. 29th at 7:30p.m. to hear & meet these two terrific authors.

Stories Books & Cafe is located at 1716 Sunset Blvd in L.A.'s 90026, right in the heart of Echo Park.

Please tell people & bring your friends. Come early & get a bite to eat from the cafe & shop for a book.

Alvin Orloff, a California native, began writing as a teenager in the 1970s, a decade from which he has never fully recovered. He is the author of I Married An Earthling (Manic D), a genre and gender-bending sci-fi send up, and Gutter Boys (Manic D), a novel of decadent romance with ghosts. Orloff is also the co-author of The Unsinkable Bambi Lake, a transsexual showbiz memoir, and his short work has appeared in Pills, Chills, Thrills, and Heartache (Alyson) as well as the journal, Instant City. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University.

He co-edited (with Marci Blackman) Beyond Definition: New Writing from Gay and Lesbian San Francisco and co-edited (with Amie M. Evans) Queer & Catholic (Routledge, 2008). His short fiction and poetry were nominated for a 2008 Pushcart Prize. Trebor lives in Los Angeles.

what is homo-centric?

homo-centric is a monthly reading series curated by Hank Henderson. The series is hosted by Stories Books & Cafe in Echo Park and takes place the 3rd Thursday of every month. By offering this space for LGBTQI writers to gather & share their words we hope to create a renewed sense of community. There's a hunger for connection and a wonder about our collective history that needs to be nurtured and continued.
